SYNOPSIS
A journey through some of the unique ecosystems of Puerto Rico highlight the critical role government agencies, University initiatives, and local communities play in the efforts of conservation and the fight against climate change.
René of the University of Puerto Rico’s Sea Grant takes us into the salt flats of Cabo Rojo. It’s the rare instance of a commercial operation having a beneficial impact on the local ecosystem.
René then leads us into the wildlife refuge for migratory birds that encompasses the salt flats to learn about the many partnerships and efforts that help maintain this complicated ecosystem. Anna of US Fish and Wildlife explains the threats that haunt this unique landscape that contributes to the extreme biodiversity of the area.
On our final stop with René, we explore the mangrove fields of La Paguera to further understand the delicate balance of conservation and community.
